| Earliest melodic memories were mostly Holst and Vaughn Williams, as well as Rogers and Hammerstein musicals, firm favourites of my parents! As mentioned in my drum bio, Sousa, the US march king was also well liked. I eventually got into rock, the bands Led Zeppelin, Yes and King Crimson were all listened to intensely. It took a while but Jazz (Weather Report, Chick Corea) eventually crept in, though I prefer more organized music in general, improvisation is great, but more rock based. Early ambient, (Brian Eno for example) also provided ear candy. Frank Zappa opened doors for me by introducing Charles Ives, Boulez, and Cage into my head space, with a lot of thought about what is music. Also the whole question of structure was altered thanks to these influences. Arabic and Indian music has steadily grown as an influence, and the scales of these types of music are a constant joy to me. Other classical composers such as Debussy, John Adams and Stravinsky are always inspiring. Music writing became important to me after being let down in various bands, be a multi tasker in music! I have studied theory for a while (I achieved my grade 8 theory in summer 2003) and song writing /composition is a hard but very rewarding process. The music goes under the name of PERIPHERIE, and different players are called in to augment the sound. It is very important for a drummer to understand the other side of music and to take part in it. Anything I write is basically to please me, if it cracks me up, it's in! I am experimenting with different forms at the present including dance (Latin American)É Literary influences, for there are (Hhhmmm, a drummer that reads); include Ray Bradbury, Arthur Machen, H.P. Love craft, F.Scott Fitzgerald ,G.I. Gurdjieff and Lord Dunsany. | |
